Built around vehicle variations.
The Landrovers builds bespoke vehicles with different powertrains, dashboards and accessories. The HMI needed to suit these platforms, designs and display configurations.
The work covered a digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch central infotainment touchscreen. Some builds used the cluster alone; others combined both displays to present vehicle information, warnings and controls.
Ole’s contribution.
As Lead HMI & Embedded Software Engineer, Ole held overall responsibility from the first basic prototypes through production planning, testing and deployment.
- Hardware selection, Linux/NXP i.MX8 architecture, C++ backend and Crank Storyboard frontend.
- GMSL2 rear-view camera integration, audio interfaces and vehicle communication over CAN.
- Integration of the externally developed CarPlay application into the embedded platform.
- Coordination of HMI development, production, testing and commissioning.
UI design was developed with The Landrovers’ in-house design team; Ole was responsible for its implementation and delivery. An external partner supplied the CarPlay application and contributed to Android Auto integration.
Design and integration.
Screen designs and available controls followed each vehicle’s hardware and display configuration. The backend connected vehicle data, driver inputs, camera and audio functions to the interface.
On-device testing covered communication and the Linux graphics pipeline. Fault diagnosis combined Linux system monitoring and software debugging with vehicle schematics, CAN tools and hands-on electrical checks.
On the road.
The in-house HMI is deployed in 20+ custom vehicles on the road at the time of writing, October 2026.
Source code and documentation supported The Landrovers’ continuing maintenance and development.
